Tv drama

Narrative

In the trailer for Waterloo road there are loads of narrative strands introduced cleverly. There is a new girl joining the school and everyone is wondering who she will be, all the students are standing as a very expensive nice car enters the school with a custom license plate. The dad opens the car door and very prestige looking girl with loads of makeup gets out the car, this shows she has power as the dad opened the door. This gets the audience thinking. She then kisses a random boy who she doesn't know as her dad told her to get rid of her lipstick. The guys girlfriend is furious with this new girl. The new girl has set a bad example. The new girl has set an impact on existing storylines as she is going to cause so much trouble especially with the guys girlfriend.

Character

There are few characters introduced in the trailer, there is the headmaster who dresses in a creased suit which sets a bad example to the school. There is the good looking boy who every girl crushes on along with the guys girlfriend who wears loads of makeup and is supposedly the bad girl. Then there is the new girls parents who dress well and look very rich, the new girl has nice clothing and wears loads of makeup. She seems really bad and looks dominant. There is no stereo types as a school would normally be represented as good and very focused students that dress well but in this school all the kids are wearing there own clothes violating school rules as they are creating chaos.

Iconography

In the trailer we see loads of students dressed in there own clothes, this shows they don't care about the school rules therefore it sets a bad example for this high school. There is the head teachers dressed badly and are holding clip boards. The sub genre is a teen drama.

Setting

The setting is a really messy disgusting school that has litter all around the floor. The trailer quickly makes the audience think the school is unhygienic and dirty, this suggests it is not looked after. The students at the school are most likely there as no other school will accept them, this also shows the school is bad.

Narrative Theory

Tzvetan Todorov is a Franco-Bulgarian philosopher. He suggests that all narratives follow a three part structure.

Equilibrium > Disequilibrium > New equilibrium

Todorov stated that all narratives start off with an Equilibrium where is starts of calmly and then a Disequilibrium where everything changes and then it ends with a New Equilibrium where the peace is restored.
In the Hunger Games, I can say that there is Todorov because it starts off peaceful where Katniss is living calmly with all the other people. The Disequilibrium occurs when her sister is chosen and Katniss volunteers to go in her place, this means she has to learn fighting skills and become skilled enough to survive. The New Equilibrium will come when she is successful in her mission.

Propp is stated that all characters fit into key types.

Vladimir Propp was a Soviet scholar who analysed the basic plot components of Russian folk tales to identify their narrative elements.
His theory states that there are only a certain number of characters, who crop up in most narratives.
Propps are in every film as they are the key features to represent what the character looks like and if they have power or not, for example if a person was wearing suits they would be associated as rich. In the Hunger Games the people are put into the districts, 1st district being the richest and 12th being the poorest. Katniss is district 12 and the way she dresses shows she is poor as well as she has to hunt for her own food. Whereas district 1 is full of people who dress fancy etc.

Protagonist (or Hero)
The protagonist in the Hunger Games is Katniss Everdeen because she is the one who has to win the hunger games.

Antagonist (or Villain)
The antagonist is Snow because he is cruel and is rich as well as he is the owner of the Hunger Games.

Heroine
The hero in the Hunger Games is a female about 20 years old.

Helper
The helper is Peeta Mellark as he is the male fighter from district 12, him and Katniss fight the hunger games as allies.

Donor
The donor is Cinna as he gives Katniss hope and faith that she can win.

Mentor
The mentor is Haymitch Abernathy because he has won the Hunger Games before so he guides Katniss.

Roland Barthes was a French literary theorist.

Barthes is stated that every trailer has enigma codes ( questions for the audience to ask ) and action codes ( where action happens ). In the Hunger Games, there are enigma codes where people want to ask is why did Katniss not run of with Gale or why did Katniss volunteer for her sister knowing she could die herself etc. As well as there are action codes where Katniss enters the Hunger Games.

In a film trailer, they are used to intrigue the audience and make them want to pay to see the whole film. This is a crucial aspect of film marketing.

Representation

1)In the Hunger Games the traditional female roles are subverted because in films women are conventionally represented as weak but in the Hunger Games the males are shown as weaker and Katniss is shown as strong and their role model. As well as Katniss Everdeen is shown as a fighter and is very brave as she sacrificed her life by volunteering for the Hunger Games instead of her sister, this also shows she loves her family.

2)The men are represented as weak because they seem soft and normally in Hollywood action adventure films men are normally really strong and muscular. There is a few male who are strong and fierce for example President Snow. Peter is physically strong but he is really emotional as he cries a lot and this is subversive as most Hollywood films have strong, fierce male characters.

3)The person who is represented as top of the hierarchy is President Snow, snow is white and his skin colour is white so this can show some sort of synergy between his name and race. It is conventional as the person with most power is a strong male.

4)The film could be suggesting that in  the future the world will be like how it was in the olden days, we were all split up and divided from races, richness, etc. This is different to every other tv show or film as they make the future seem really cool and full of amazing technology but in the Hunger Games the future is shown as unfair and old fashioned for the poor districts where as the rich districts have loads of technology. This could show the audience that maybe we might not all be equal one day ?

Writing a film pitch

Your chosen movie
1) What film have you chosen? The hunger games.

2) Why did you choose this film in particular? I choose this film because it is really interesting and it is a good movie.

Institutional background
Use IMDB to find out the institutions behind your chosen film. Find your film, click on Company Credits and then look for the production company and UK distributor.

1) What was the film studio or production company behind your chosen film? E.g. Warner Brothers, Paramount etc. Lionsgate made this movie.

2) Who was the distributor for the theatrical release of the film in the UK? It was
In Theaters march 23, 2012 .

No brand loyalty
1) What genre does your chosen film fit into? The hunger games will fit into action, adventure, thriller, si-fi .

2) How can you tell it fits that genre? Be specific with reference to the trailer. There is a women and man that both get elected to be in the hunger games, fight to win . Therefore there will be loads of action and adventure song with some thriller and sc-fi .

3) Does your chosen film have any stars or a director that are known for that particular genre? Jennifer Lawrence, Liam Hemsworth, Josh Hutcherson .

It’s all a matter of timing
1) What was the UK release date for your chosen film? this film was realesed march 23rd 2012 .

2) When did the first trailer appear on YouTube for your movie? Find the earliest example you can and embed it in your blog.  July 21st 2013 .

3) What other examples of marketing (teaser trailers, main trailers, newspaper or TV interviews etc.) can you find for your chosen film from before the film’s release date? Another example is that they had got Instagram to release the trailer to get more people to see the trailer and then want to go and see the movie .

It’s a social thing
1) What was the word-of-mouth like for your chosen film? If you can’t find tweets (probably blocked) use the IMDB user review rating or the Rotten Tomatoes Tomatometer rating to judge whether the public have given the movie a good review. The movie has been giving a good review . "I read the book years ago and loved it. "

2) Find three quotes (no more than 25 words each) from user reviews of your movie to create a picture of what the public reaction to the film has been. Post them on your blog.

I read the book years ago and loved it. "
Now after watching the film I am certainly disappointed. "
Save your money and don't watch this; just read the book. "

Risky business
Use IMDB to find out the box office records for your chosen film. Find your film, click on Company Credits and then Box Office/Business. You may want to use the excellent website Box Office Mojo to find out the budget and box office success for the film.

1) What was the original budget for your chosen film? $78,000,000  (estimated)

2) How much money did the film make in the opening weekend? $152,535,747 (USA) (23 March 2012)

3) How much money has the film made in total? (Look for the subheading ‘Gross’ which has the total box-office earnings listed).$407,999,255  (USA) (31 August 2012)

4) For a film to be considered a box office success, it needs to make at least two-and-a-half times the budget in box office takings. Using this method, was the film you have chosen a success? (Or, if it's a recent release, do you expect it to be a box office success?)  Yes this film was successful as the budget they spent on the film was $78,000,000  and in 5 months they got more than double the money back therefore they made a huge profit out of this movie.

Stars in their eyes
Research the stars and director for your chosen film.

1) What films has the director previously directed? Are they in the same or similar genres? Pleasantiville, Seabiscuit, Free state of Jones. Gary Boss ( the director ) is mainly in action, adventure films so they are similar genres.

2) Who is the main star in the film? The main star in the hunger games is Jennifer Lawrence.

3) What other films has the main star appeared in? Are any of the films similar to the one you are researching? Jennifer Lawrence has been in the movie passengers, Joy, X-men. So she is mainly in action, adventure movies so the genre is similar to the hunger games one.

4) Are the stars or the director or writer mentioned in the trailer for the film? No, in the hunger games trailer there is not one part that mentions the director or the main characters names.
